Reducing Camera Counts in Stairwells: Bosch FLEXIDOME panoramic 5100i

Matt Golueke January 2, 2024 21:53 PM

We we are regularly approached by clients who seek solutions to reduce the number of cameras required in their stairwells, while also enhancing the field of view for improved safety and security.

But first, why do we need cameras in stairwells anyway?

Installing security cameras in stairwells is crucial for ensuring the safety and security of individuals for numerous compelling reasons. Stairwells often remain secluded and hidden, making them potential grounds for unauthorized activities and criminal acts. By closely monitoring these areas, security cameras act as a powerful deterrent against criminal behavior while also serving as a reliable source of evidence in the event of an incident. Secondly, in emergency situations like fires or medical emergencies, these cameras play a vital role in swiftly locating and assisting distressed individuals, aiding first responders in their life-saving efforts. The mere presence of surveillance cameras instills a sense of reassurance among people, knowing that their movements are being monitored and that immediate assistance is readily available if required. The installation of security cameras in stairwells significantly enhances the safety and security of occupants by effectively deterring crimes, facilitating prompt emergency responses, and fostering an environment of safety and peace of mind.

So what's the best answer?

After extensive hands-on evaluation, we introduced the new Bosch panoramic cameras that have surpassed all expectations. These cutting-edge cameras offer a myriad of benefits that not only optimize surveillance capabilities but also ensure utmost safety and security in stairwell environments...and now include an option to detect the sound and approximate direction of a gun shot.

Our primary objective is always to find a solution that allows for a reduction in camera counts while simultaneously increasing the field of view. With the new panoramic cameras, we were able to achieve this goal seamlessly. These cameras boast advanced technology and innovative features that have revolutionized the way we perceive surveillance.

Stairway with HDR Use-Case Demonstration

One of the most impressive features of these cameras is their ability to capture clear and detailed footage even in challenging lighting conditions. With an enhanced dynamic range, they excel in situations where extreme contrasts exist, such as bright sunlight streaming through windows or dimly lit areas. This ensures that every detail is meticulously captured, providing accurate and reliable surveillance footage.

In addition to their exceptional dynamic range, the new panoramic cameras offer significantly wider viewing angles. Our testing revealed astonishing results, allowing us to capture even the smallest details from a distance. For instance, we were able to capture the ceiling wallpaper trim from a distance of 25 feet in a large room with a 10-foot ceiling. Similarly, in a stairwell scenario, we were able to capture three complete sets of stairs, including various landings, corners, and steps, all with exceptional clarity. This wider viewing angle ensures comprehensive coverage, eliminating blind spots and maximizing surveillance capabilities.

Over-sized Stairway Proof of Concept Demonstration

Eric Moreau, PSP of Theseus Professional Services requested a proof of concept demonstration for one of his clients to test his theory that they could reduce camera counts throughout their facilities. One path forward proposed was to deploy half the number of cameras in stairwells by using panoramic cameras instead of twice as many fixed field-of-view cameras as they had done in the past.  The stairwells are oversized and presented significant challenges for conventional surveillance strategies. If proven, the reduction would likely result in fewer VMS licenses, lower installation costs, lower cost for camera purchases, lower network bandwidth utilization, and add the option to turn on audio and gunshot detection analytics, which are already included in the camera, should the client decide to implement the audio alarming option.

Joe Barnhart gathered his Bosch FLEXIDOME panoramic 5100i IR 12MP camera, network equipment, laptop, and safety gear and headed to the facility, which was still under construction, to assist Theseus with confirming their theory for the difficult stairwell application solution.

Did you hear that?

One of the most impressive features of the new panoramic cameras is the built-in smart microphone array. This innovative addition allows for clear audio capture, enhancing the overall surveillance experience. Additionally, these cameras can be optionally licensed for gunshot detection, providing an added layer of security and safety in sensitive areas. See our article about Audio AI...

And there's more...

To further enhance the functionality of these cameras, Bosch-made accessories are available to assist with challenging mounting configurations. These accessories provide flexibility and convenience, allowing for easy installation in various locations and angles. Whether it's a challenging outdoor environment or a unique indoor setup, these accessories ensure optimal positioning and performance.
