Power Protection and UPS for Security and IT

dc-power-outage-imagePower Protection and UPS are critical devices often overlooked "until it's too late."

Washington DC government and businesses learned about this all too well on April 7 when widespread power outages paralyzed the DC metro area.

Simple, relatively inexpensive devices can mean the difference between smooth business operations continuity and disaster.

Disaster comes in many different degrees: single device destruction, network outage, corporate data corruption, and even complete operations halt.  A complete halt can mean an unsecured building, loss of employee productivity, revenue loss, reputation and brand devaluation, etc.

Start protecting at the electrical panels. A simple panel surge protector and provide a phenomenal first layer of defense for only a few hundred dollars. Check out this video to better understand what a panel surge protector is and how it is connected to your electrical panel:

Once the panel has a reliable, reputable protection layer deployed, it's time to move toward the systems within your organization. Think about each employee's desk.  Is the computer sitting there plugged into a UPS for workstation level protection?

Next, what about the network? Each network closet needs to have the IT devices protected and available at all times for seamless business operations.  A range of UPS devices are available depending on the calculated power load and desired run-time.

Next, think about the various systems in the building. Take security as an example.  For video surveillance to intrusion detection, these systems are critical to safety and security. Plus, replacement of cameras, operator control centers, and worse, loss of recorded video due to data corruption are unnecessary and unacceptable.

For critical applications, it's best to understand the differences between UPS models.  Some are for non-critical operations, such as a desk computer. Others are always online, double conversion UPS, and are intended for mission critical equipment and system protection. Take a look at this short video to understand what a mission critical UPS requires:

Consideration of power backup and reliability needs can be daunting. It's critical to get protected with the right equipment for the application right away.
