Network System Design: Outdoor and Harsh Environment

Ok, so bandwidth created by IP cameras is a BIG topic, especially how Bosch keeps the bandwidth at an industry low with Content Based Imaging Technology (CBIT).

Now, let's take a step sideways and talk about the backbone of the system: the network infrastructure.

Special considerations should be taken when deploying switch gear in areas such as:

  • Roadside cabinets (ITS/traffic/city)
  • Salt water (shoreline)
  • Extreme cold
  • Extreme heat
  • High humidity
  • Critical infrastructure
  • Power and Utility

Comnet is a name you might recognize if you're reading this from the perspective of the security industry, whereas if you're an IT pro then maybe not. While Comnet doesn't provide the same core switch technology that Brocade or Cisco do, Comnet does provide the edge switches and wireless components that bring the IP camera data back to the core switch(s) and then into the Video Management System. Deploying edge network devices, whether wired switches or wireless transmitters or receivers, can make or break the system.
