Dual-purposing and/or re-purposing legacy coaxial cable infrastructure for IP video

Matt Golueke January 18, 2016 22:55 PM

Security pro's are relying on innovative system design and technology to plan for system upgrades and manage project cost.

Many are consider dual-purposing and/or re-purposing legacy coaxial cable infrastructure.

Primary considerations: re-using all or part of your existing infrastructure

  • reduce labor expense and cable cost
  • near-zero interruption, particularly in Plenum cable installations

In this post, Jeff Leite from Comnet takes on a few questions related to existing CCTV wiring infrastructure and applies new technology innovations for the solution.

Can I run an IP camera's Ethernet signal simultaneously over coax with an analog video signal?

Yes you can, and it is simple. Comnet makes a box that simply drops in where you already have power and coaxial cable in place from your analog video system and the desire to keep your analog camera but add a megapixel nearby. Although it does not support up-the-coax control signals for analog PTZ cameras, it does have the ability to provide up to 30Watts of PoE for the new edge device and that’s enough for most fixed cameras with environmental housings or integrated IR and many new IP PTZ cameras. The non-POE version is equally simple and can be used to send data to and from a camera that has dual signal outputs, one coaxial BNC connector plus one RJ45.

Why is this important?

It gives you the flexibility to choose when you make the migration to IP and forget about forklifting all the cameras at once. All ethernet over coax products give you this type of flex but only Comnet allows you to run both signals over the same cable while generating PoE at the edge for seamless, simple installation.

Who's using this?

Anyone who wants to add an IP camera within 100Meters of an existing analog camera who may not have the budget to forklift their entire existing CCTV investment.

Other uses:

  • Upgrade comparison: show a side-by-side comparison of existing analog and a possible new HD camera. A prominent library in Philadelphia has a demo in their main lobby right now doing just this. The new IP camera looks amazing compared to the old analog one, but in order to get the budget to upgrade, they needed to see it in a real world shootout. Many end users will be impressed by this!
  • Near-zero outage: use in critical areas where you can’t afford downtime while migrating to IP. This will keep the analog live right up to the cutover, very little lost coverage
