Surge Protection: PoE switches and overload or power surge

Power surge is a dangerous situation for all electronic devices.  One of our security partners asked this question about power protection:

"Do you offer any PoE (power over ethernet) switches or injectors that have overload, short circuit, and/or surge protection on the PoE outputs?"

Here's what we found...

Comnet PoE switches don’t offer internal surge protection, however specifc models WILL shut off the PoE if the current threshold is exceeded. This helps protect downstream devices such as computers, security cameras, storage appliances, and other parts of the network infrastructure.

We recommend external surge protection:

For example, the CNGE1IPS is a 30 watt, industrial environment rated, PoE injector that does have an internal power supply that provides short circuit protection.

Overload protection:

As for switches, the CNGE28FX4TX24MSPOE+ and CWGE26FX2TX24MSPOE are both examples of 24-Port POE network switches that are each overload current protected.

We have a significant amount of free information on our website regarding the various stand alone options for power protection.  Check out the educational resources here.

We recommend Orion Power Systems as a great place to start loking for power protection.  Learn more about Orion here.
