When people think of perimeter intrusion detection (PIDS), they often think about long fence lines, large perimeters, and wide-open areas that need strong protection. Those have always been important applications, but they are not the only places where perimeter security matters.

At any site, there are also smaller areas that can create risk. These include blind spots under structures, roof access points, corners, sally ports, ladders, and other tight spaces where intrusion or escape could happen if those areas are left unprotected. During this discussion, Jeff Drews of Southwest Microwave explained that these smaller areas and openings are exactly what the company’s new MS30-POE-S sensor is designed to address.

The MS30-POE-S is a short-range microwave sensor built to act as a gap filler.
It uses Southwest Microwave’s core microwave technology, which is valued because it performs well in harsh weather. According to Jeff, conditions such as dust, snow, and heavy rain should not affect microwave sensing the way they can impact some other technologies. That makes it a strong option for outdoor environments where dependable performance is critical.

That shorter range is intentional. It allows security designers to protect the smaller spaces between larger perimeter detection zones, helping reduce weak spots around a facility.

Another key benefit is flexibility. The sensor can be adjusted to provide up to a 120-degree field of view, and that coverage can also be narrowed significantly when needed. It can also detect direction of travel, which is useful in applications such as doors or passage points where a site may want to alarm on entry but not on exit. This gives integrators and end users more control over how the sensor is used in real-world situations.

The product is also simple from an installation standpoint. It uses standard PoE power, making it a low-power network-based device. It comes as a kit with the mounting brackets and hardware included, so customers can order one part number and receive most of what they need for installation. The installer still needs to provide the pole, network connection, and supporting infrastructure, but the sensor package itself is designed to simplify deployment.

On the integration side, the MS30-POE-S works directly with Southwest Microwave’s own systems and head-end applications. It also offers native MQTT output, which helps it connect with many third-party systems as well. That makes it easier to fit into a wider range of perimeter security designs.

Jeff also pointed out an important business advantage: cost. Traditional microwave sensors can become expensive depending on range and application. This new solution is designed to cost roughly one-third of the company’s normal microwave sensors. That lower price opens the door for more commercial projects and other sites that may not have the same budget as large government-funded perimeter programs.

The main takeaway from the conversation: perimeter protection is not just about the big fence line anymore. Small gaps can create big vulnerabilities. With the MS 30 POE S, Southwest Microwave is offering a practical, weather-resistant, flexible, and more affordable way to help security professionals close those gaps.
