Aside from overall UPS power supply systems for the building, network, or security system headend (see Orion Power Systems info here), security practitioners need to consider power redundancy at the edge device.
Here is a short overview of PoE basics:
Step 1: don't forget to UPS your network infrastructure devices. (see Orion Power Systems info here)
Let's say your network switch fails. Now what? No power. No video stream to the NVR. No recorded video. No evidence of the crime. Sounds like a way for a smart criminal to avoid detection.
Step 2: consider adding redundant/parallel power directly to the camera...that's right, dual power sources directly into the camera. Many cameras can accept both PoE and 24VAC or 12VDC at the same time.
Let's think that network switch failure through a bit more. Why not provide dual power AND record locally in the camera to a small SD card? Now the camera will continue to operate and record locally even though the network switch has failed...whether due to deceptive efforts or due to simple equipment failure. Check out IPVM's take on edge recording here.
We took a much closer look at the reliability and positioning of SD card edge recording in a recent blog post. Check out
