Video Management System (VMS) Licensing Considerations

Security professionals need to consider licensing as part of a video surveillance system upgrade.

While some solutions are license free, usually involving all-in-one appliances like the Bosch Divar IP 3000/7000 Series, enterprise systems usually require a variety of license keys.

Components that require licenses often include:

  • cameras
  • encoders
  • decoders
  • PTZ keyboard controllers
  • workstations

Once installed and running, the next license type comes into play: Software Maintenance Agreements, or SMA's. SMA's are common in the IT space, but not as much in the security space.

Nick Hoyt and Jim Doyle took a few minutes to fill us in on the details surrounding VMS licensing and SMA's.
