Amusement Park Risk: Do Cameras Tell the Rest of the Story?

It's been a tragic month at amusement parks.

Three children fell from a ferris wheel in Tennessee. One child was fatally injured on a waterslide in Kansas. And a child fell from a roller coaster near Pittsburgh.

Tragic events.

How are they being investigated? How may they have been prevented? There are certainly many levels of investigation underway. Witnesses will be interviewed, accident recreation may be involved. Engineers and forensic experts will inspect mechanical components. Changes will be made to design and safety to increase safety for future adventure seekers.

Let's pose a few questions for the experts who read our blog...

  • What part does video surveillance play in the telling of the untold stories we referenced above?
  • Is video surveillance customary to capture actions of staff and visitors during loading and unloading?
  • Are part or all of the track areas under surveillance to capture accidents?
  • Are those same cameras used to prevent accidents by observing debris or other problems before the car/vehicle encounters the obstacle?
  • Are you deploying or seeing video analytics as part of the safety solution?
  • How are observers kept from the areas near the ride?  Is perimeter detection used to alert staff of unauthorized access? Are video analytics used for this? Fence detection? Reliance upon fence height/type?
  • What additional thoughts do you have on this topic?

This type of application shows that security cameras aren't just for security. Observation of human actions goes beyond protection of assets. Security cameras being used for post-incident investigation, human resources investigations, manufacturing observation, and more.

Perhaps your ideas and suggestions will end up ensuring a safer visit for a future visitor. Thanks for participating in this important conversation.
